The Carabinieri of San Pietro Vernotico, in the province of Brindisi, have charged a 47-year-old bricklayer with the illegal possession of an iguana measuring approximately 1.2 meters (4.9 feet). Specifically, yesterday afternoon, the animal's owner allowed the reptile to wander from its holding location onto the town streets, failing to take the necessary precautions to ensure its safety. The man was found to be illegally possessing the reptile, lacking the required documentation. The specimen was secured, placed under criminal seizure, and released into the custody of its de facto owner. Italy applies the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in Washington on March 3, 1973, as well as the regulations for the sale and possession of live specimens of mammals and reptiles that may pose a danger to public health and safety. The law for those who illegally possess live specimens and fail to comply with the provisions for their protection and safety provides for a fine ranging from 15,000 to 300,000 euros or imprisonment of up to 6 months.
