“The high responsibility that has been entrusted to you by the parliamentarians of the countries of the Union represents a testimony of the broad trust placed in you and a recognition of your constant and fruitful commitment to the European institutions”. This is the message that President Sergio Mattarella sent to the new President of the EP David Sassoli, wishing him all the best for his election. “On behalf of all Italians and on my own behalf – added the Head of State – I would like to extend my warmest congratulations on your election as President of the European Parliament and heartfelt wishes for full success in carrying out your very important role”. The newly elected President of the European Parliament hopes that all of “Italy is happy” with his role. He said this at the end of his first press conference as President, answering a question about the anomaly of a representative of the government opposition leading the parliamentary assembly. Regarding the presence, in Strasbourg, of representatives of the NGO Open Arms on a boat docked on the Ill river in front of the European Parliament, Sassoli stressed that the Parliament "is open to citizens, to lobbies, to all legitimate interests and of course to the entire world of NGOs with which dialogue is constant". The new President of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, wrote on Twitter: "Many, probably out of affection, have written that my election as President of the European Parliament would redeem Italy's honor. I thank you. But - he specifies - Italy's honor will never depend on a single person. It depends on the fact that we are a great, extraordinary country".
