Naples. Over 200 tons of mussels were seized in two separate operations by the Naples Financial Police. If released on the market, they could have generated a profit of approximately €500. Officers from the Naples Naval Station seized two large, illegal mussel farms located near the entrance to the commercial port and near the nearby Santa Lucia harbor. Given that the farm did not comply with any of the hygiene and health requirements imposed by current legislation, a team from the Naples Local Health Authority's Veterinary Service intervened during the operations, sampling the mussels for subsequent microbiological and chemical analysis. Due to their offshore location, these farms could have seriously hindered the safety of ships and vessels transiting the Gulf of Naples, including those competing in the Universiade sailing competition. The large floating plastic drums and the ropes that tied the thousands of rows of mussels were, in fact, positioned, out of sight, just below the surface of the sea.
