The tobacconist attacked by a non-EU citizen on June 9th has died in hospital in Naples. The violent incident occurred in front of his shop in the Chiaiano subway station. Ulderico Esposito, 52, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage after being punched by a Nigerian man who regularly harassed people in the area. He was arrested that same evening by police. Before that June 9th, for days, business owners in the Chiaiano neighborhood and daily users of the subway system had been reporting the presence of the man, who, often drunk, would become violent only if anyone approached him. The Nigerian immigrant, illegally in Italy, had also harassed Esposito, who had urged him to stay away from his shop; then, coldly and without warning, he punched him in the face. Not only did the tobacconist suffer facial trauma, but also head trauma from violently hitting his head on the ground. He fainted, bleeding from his nose and ears when the station security guards rescued him. The 32-year-old Nigerian man, however, was apprehended after the incident and taken by police to the police station and then to prison. His charges have now been upgraded from grievous bodily harm to voluntary manslaughter. "A great husband, a father, an exemplary man, a friend to all, was needlessly left near death by a Nigerian man. His dangerousness had been reported several times, but he was never removed," his wife and daughters said immediately after the serious attack.
