Monsignor Salvatore Angerami, Auxiliary Bishop of Naples, Rector of the Archiepiscopal Seminary, and Moderator of the Curia, has died at the age of 62. The Metropolitan Archbishop, Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe, announced the news "with deep sorrow." Angerami died this morning at 7:15 a.m., after "a long and inexorable illness that he endured with Christian resignation and extreme clarity, entrusting himself to God's Mercy and never failing in his duties as a bishop. Until the end of his ordeal," Cardinal Sepe added, "he cared for the seminarians with paternal care and the responsible sensitivity of one called to train young men who have chosen the path of the priesthood. Despite his trials and confinement to the bed of harsh suffering, on Saturday, June 29, he joyfully shared, through photos and videos, the sacred ordination of 13 new priests, whom he had lovingly accompanied over these years." Angerami was born in Naples on November 26, 1956. Before becoming a priest on June 22, 1997, he worked as an engineer. He was parish priest of the church of San Gennaro al Vomero, on Via Bernini, and episcopal vicar. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Naples on September 27, 2014. The chapel of rest has been set up in the mother church of the Major Seminary at Viale Colli Aminei 3, where it will be possible to pay homage to Monsignor Angerami from 11:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. today. The solemn funeral will be held tomorrow, Monday, July 8, at 11:00 a.m. in the Cathedral of Naples. Cardinal Crescenzio Sepe will preside, with the other two auxiliary bishops of Naples, Monsignor Lucio Lemmo and Monsignor Gennaro Acampa, concelebrating, with the participation of other bishops from Campania. Episcopal vicars, deans, parish priests, diocesan priests, and religious men will also concelebrate. Permanent deacons, seminarians, religious sisters, and lay Catholic movements and associations will also be present. After the funeral rite, the body of Monsignor Salvatore Angerami will be interred in the First Chapel of the Immaculate Conception in Borgo Loreto, located in the New Cemetery of Poggioreale.
