For the first time in Campania and exclusively for Southern Italy, the Roman amphitheater of Avella is ready to welcome one of the most interesting and acclaimed formations of contemporary jazz: SNARKY PUPPY. Friday, July 12 at 21:XNUMX p.m., for the preview of the XNUMXth edition of the Pomigliano Jazz in Campania festival, the unpredictable ensemble led by the Californian composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Michael League, will take to the stage.
Winner of three Grammy Awards, named “Jazz Group of the Year” by DownBeat readers and “Best Contemporary Group” by JazzTimes readers, Snarky Puppy move between jazz, funk and R&B, written music and total improvisation: all driven by the extraordinary technique and background possessed by each of the musicians in the combo.
After the tours in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and USA, now it's Europe's turn where the Texan collective, based in Brooklyn, is expected until November for a long series of concerts that will also touch Italy for 5 dates. Live they present the songs from the latest album, "Immigrance", published last March for GroundUP Music. Three years after the previous "Culcha Vulcha", this album challenges genres with a synthesis of global scope, which results in wide-ranging approaches and musical styles.
Diversity and belonging to different places and cultures are the concepts that inspire the album: everyone can contribute thanks to their own experiences and cultural background. A true celebration of multiculturalism, in an album that pushes humanity to change its point of view, seeing diversity as a benefit to be enjoyed.
Born in 2004 as a typical college band (the original core is composed of students from the University of North Texas) Snarky Puppy has quickly become one of the most popular acronyms in the world of jazz and fusion, terms that in their case are reductive. In reality, their music escapes any classification precisely because of their ability to concentrate with extreme ease the sounds of contemporaneity.
“We’ve always been a band that embraces differences instead of trying to equalize them,” explains band leader Michael League (formerly with David Crosby). “The individual personalities of the musicians are what really give the band its sound. Everyone comes from a different background and so it injects a new perspective, a unique voice, into the music.”
There are two sectors to attend the concert at the Pomigliano Jazz festival: the first, standing in the Cavea of the amphitheater for 25 euros + presale; the second, seated with a numbered seat on the steps surrounding the large stage, for 28 euros + presale. Tickets on sale on the AzzurroService circuit: https://www.azzurroservice.net/biglietti/snarky-puppy-immigrance-tour-2019-pomgliano-jazz-biglietti/ (tel. 0815934001).
The opening act of the Avella concert will be the Mimmo Langella Trio: together with the Neapolitan guitarist we find Vittorio Pepe on bass and Pasquale De Paola on drums.
