International cocaine trafficking has been discovered in the port of Genoa: officials from the Genoa Customs Agency's Anti-Fraud Office and members of the Genoa Financial Police's II Group seized 19 bags containing 493 blocks of highly pure cocaine, originating from the port of Cartagena, Colombia, weighing approximately 538 kilograms. The drugs were hidden in a container bound for Naples. The discovery was made on May 1st, but the news was only released today. The operation is the result of monitoring maritime trade flows through the port of Genoa, which has recently been the scene of large-scale seizures, not least last January, when Genoa's financial police from the PEF Unit and II Group seized 2 tons and 103 kilograms of cocaine—the largest cocaine seizure ever made in Italy. The operations, coordinated by the District Anti-Mafia and Anti-Terrorism Directorate of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Ligurian capital, received international support from the French authorities. The drug, if released on the market, would have netted the criminal organizations over €200 million.
