Over 3.000 volunteers are working at the Naples 2019 Universiade, earning €3 an hour for six- or eight-hour shifts. Amesci was awarded a €1,1 million contract to recruit them. "They are the true backbone of the event," explains Neapolitan union representative Giuseppe Alviti, "who work tirelessly to ensure the success of every phase of the sporting event, but if they're lucky, by the end of the Universiade, they will have earned less than €275. The Regional Agency for the Universiade provided the volunteers with a weekly public transport pass, event uniforms, on-site meals, and a €15 reimbursement for telephone expenses. Deducting these out-of-pocket expenses from a salary of less than €25 a day would have been truly excessive." As the ARU explains in a press release, the transfers to volunteers will be made only at the end of the sporting event, once the actual working days have been calculated. It also explains that volunteers will not be able to work for more than five consecutive days.

The 280th edition of the Summer Universiade cost over 1,1 million euros in total. The contract for the selection and training of volunteers was awarded for a sum of 2 million euros to Amesci, which won with a discount of just 2.000%, beating the only other competitor that had participated in the tender. Of this money, over half a million euros are used to manage the service, so they go directly to Amesci, and the rest is used for a series of expenses, including the money to be given to the volunteers.” It must be said that in previous editions of the Universiade - explains Alviti - the volunteers did not receive any compensation, therefore the Neapolitan edition is the first to provide an expense reimbursement for those who work there. The contract for the selection and management of other professional figures, including volunteer managers, delegation officers, IT technicians, administrative technicians and many others, was won in two different tenders by IFEL and During. Those who ended up with these two entities, on the other hand, have a very different salary. For example, sector managers earn over 300 euros with a freelance collaboration with a VAT number. Amesci, Ifel and During have received significant contracts, but what will remain in the territory in terms of employment impact is the work of volunteers, who, if all goes well, will be able to collect less than XNUMX euros from the Universiade”.
