Matteo Ciampi gave Italy its first swimming medal. The 22-year-old Roman won silver in the 400 freestyle with a time of 3.50.04. Second place behind Japan's Yoshida, Ciampi studies at Roma Tre University and is competing at the Universiade for the first time. The swimmer is fresh from his success at the Settecolli in Rome, where he won the gold medal in the 200 freestyle, and will compete in the next World Championships in Gwangju.
