Not just sports: the Organizing Committee of the 30th Summer Universiade offers athletes and delegates a vast cultural program to discover the culture and wonders of Naples and Campania. From music to exhibitions, and again, archaeological excavations, theater and workshops, the events will be held in some of the most evocative places in the area throughout the duration of the sporting event. On July 5, the Ercolano Archaeological Park will host a large delegation of FISU officials and athletes who will be able to visit the beauties of the site. The route will touch the main domus and monuments, stopping at the Central Baths and the Palestra.
“The Ercolano Archaeological Park – says director Francesco Sirano – is a place of choice thanks to the presence of the ancient Palestra, home to the associations of the iuvenes future citizens of Herculaneum and a place where training and competitions took place. The Palestra was equipped with a portico twice as wide as normal for indoor races, grandiose reception and worship rooms and a splendid cross-shaped swimming pool with a bronze fountain in the center depicting the Hydra of Lerna, one of the most important labors of Hercules. This extraordinary monument bears witness to how much attention in the ancient world was dedicated to sports practice as a fundamental moment in the education of young generations. I am truly satisfied with the choice to visit Ercolano and to receive such a large delegation of participants in this world event, demonstrating the interest in places of art that in this way have a further opportunity to become a testimony of ancient culture but also of sound management and good valorization”.
