Simon Gautier, the 27-year-old French hiker found dead on a cliff overlooking the sea in Cilento, is believed to have died from a ruptured femoral artery, which caused a violent, fatal hemorrhage.
The autopsy conducted late this morning at the morgue of Sapri Hospital, in the province of Salerno, sheds further light on the external examination of the body, conducted after the body was found in a ravine in San Giovanni Piro. The autopsy was performed by forensic pathologist Adamo Maiese, appointed by the Vallo della Lucania prosecutor's office, which has opened an investigation into alleged delays in rescue operations. A thorough examination of the body revealed numerous fractures to the lower limbs and vertebrae. The massive hemorrhage, caused by the fracture, particularly in the left leg, is believed to have caused death approximately forty minutes after the young man made a phone call to 118 on the morning of August 9th, when he had decided to take a solo trip to the Gulf of Policastro. As soon as the body is released by the judiciary, it will be returned to France.
