On September 21st and 22nd, for the European Heritage Days, whose theme this year is "One, Two, Three... Art! – Culture and Entertainment," the sites of the Pompeii Archaeological Park will offer special visits to some of the buildings. The theme for the days is linked to the "thermal baths," a favorite place for ancient Romans to spend time, converse, and relax. These baths are present throughout the ancient city of Pompeii, as well as in the Villas of Oplontis and Stabiae. At all sites, Park officials will be available throughout the morning to explain the facilities. At the Boscoreale Antiquarium, in addition to the museum rooms and the exhibition dedicated to the Protohistoric Village of Longola, visitors can also visit Villa Regina, a rustic villa focused on wine production, recently reopened after restoration. In Pompeii, the Praedia of Julia Felix will be open to the public, with limited access to the Domus's private bath complex; the House of the Cryptoporticus, also featuring a valuable bathing facility; the House of Triptolemus; and the House of the Anchor. For the occasion, the Forum Baths will reopen to the public following their restoration.

: In the last year, the thermal complex has undergone safety and consolidation work on the rooms in the men's section, including the gymnasium, restoration of the decorative rooms, and revision and replacement of the roofs, as envisaged by the Great Pompeii Project. Located behind the Temple of Jupiter, and brought to light in the years 1823-24, it was the most central of the city's thermal facilities, located near the Forum. They were built in the early years of the Sullan colony (second quarter of the 62st century BC) and had two separate sections for men and women with independent entrances. The men's section, which can be visited, which opened onto Via delle Terme, has the typical sequence of rooms that included: the apodyterium (changing room), also used as a tepidarium (for medium-temperature baths), the frigidarium (for cold baths) and the calidarium (for hot baths). Like many buildings in Pompeii, the baths suffered serious damage during the earthquake of 500 AD. The current state is largely the result of subsequent restoration work. Of particular value is the decoration of the rooms, including the terracotta male figures (telamons) that decorated the niches for storing clothes and bathing objects and the vault with elaborate relief stuccoes of the apodyterium-tepidarium. In the same room you can see a large bronze brazier with bovine legs and heads, which was used for heating. Of note in the calidarium, and the subject of recent restoration, is the large marble labrum (cold water basin) used for cooling off, which has a bronze inscription along the edge, with the name of the magistrates who financed its construction. The smaller women's section was being renovated at the time of the eruption and is currently used as a storage area for finds. More than XNUMX lamps found in the entrance area of the men's section must have been used for lighting during the evening openings.

In Boscoreale, moreover, for the occasion, some brochures will be distributed, created as part of the 2018-19 School-Work Alternation, promoted by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii in collaboration with the Istituto Superiore Cesaro-Vesevus branch of Boscoreale with the students of the IV B of the Human Sciences High School, coordinated by Prof. Lucia Oliva and Dr. Anna Maria Sodo, head of the Antiquarium.

ENTRANCE to the sites on both days is at the usual cost. In Pompeii the opening hours of the buildings mentioned (Forum Baths, Baths of the Praedia of Julia Felix, House of the Cryptoporticus, House of Triptolemus, House of the Anchor) are 9.30-17.15. Evening opening on Saturday 21 September 2019: symbolic cost of € 1 with free entry by law.
