Unknown individuals broke into two recycling centers in Acerra, in the province of Naples, damaging and stealing the entire surveillance system from one and several washing machines stored among the bulky waste from the other. Mayor Raffaele Lettieri announced the incident, describing it as "a criminal network operating to undermine the city's recycling system and halt the progress being made." The incident occurred last night when unknown individuals first entered the recycling center in the Frassitelli area, shortly after 10:30 PM, breaking down the island's entrance gates and then breaking down the doors to the building that controls the video surveillance system, from where they stole the secure cabinets containing the control system. The alarm system went off, alerting the company that manages the systems. The site will remain closed to allow for restoration work. A few minutes later, criminals also entered the island on Via Mulino Vecchio, cutting a fence, which set off the alarms. However, the criminals were unable to remove the surveillance system, and instead "settled" for stealing a few broken appliances stored on the site, and damaged other waste collection bins. Less damage occurred in this case; in fact, the collection center is expected to reopen today, following police investigations and some renovations. The incidents have been reported to law enforcement, who are reviewing the footage to identify the perpetrators. The mayor, for his part, emphasized that the vandalism and thefts were "committed precisely on days when the city of Acerra, which already records a separate waste collection rate of around 70%, joined Legambiente's "I don't confer" campaign to reduce the disposal of unsorted waste, precisely during the weeks the incinerator was shut down. This campaign achieved a significant 80% success rate, with residual waste collected every 15 days."
