At the Correale Museum, work has been completed to restore part of the park inside the museum and to create a typical Sorrento pergola. The work involved approximately 3000 square meters, where a hail-proof netting and a complete windbreak of approximately 100 meters were installed, located both on the Via Rota side and on the downstream side, facing the sea and embellished with chestnut wood strips.
ruCarried out under the direction of agronomist Tullio Esposito, the works were financed with the extraordinary contribution of the Municipality of Sorrento of 70 thousand euros, allocated with Determination 1005 of 21 June 2018: «We are taking care of every aspect of the Museum – explains the President of the Correale Museum Gaetano Mauro – In fact, the “Adopt an artwork” project was launched, which sees more and more restorers working in our museum to bring new light to the treasures of painting, it was time that the gardens of the park were also revalued. I thank the Administration of the Municipality of Sorrento that financed the entire work, allowing us to recreate one of the characteristics of Sorrento agriculture: the pergola. The next objective to be achieved is the arrangement of the entire garden of the museum property and the creation of a “botanical garden”, in order to increase the museum offer and create an increasingly important attraction for tourists and residents who can already benefit from it for free every Thursday and Sunday».
The works were carried out under the supervision of the Director of the Correale Museum, architect Filippo Merola: "A true work of agricultural engineering. The pergola that is part of the agricultural museum fund, is in all respects a typical construction of the Sorrento peninsula, characterized precisely by the particular production techniques, to cover the treetops, in order to protect them above all from the cold, wind and hail, to also achieve a delay in the ripening of the fruit. We must give credit to the Municipality of Sorrento, more than ever convinced that the relaunch of agriculture must pass through a close link with tourism and be accompanied by a redevelopment of abandoned land and gardens. Territorial redevelopment to be encouraged and carried forward as the only valid strategy to make the tourist offer of the territory interesting and truly competitive".
