A 70-year-old woman bled to death in the Piedimonte Matese hospital, where she had been hospitalized for several days because, as a Jehovah's Witness, she had refused blood transfusions. Today's edition of Il Mattino reports the news. The woman had bleeding gastritis, and transfusions and appropriate treatment would have been enough to save her. However, both she and her son repeatedly explained to doctors during her hospital stay that they did not consent to any type of transfusion, and so the woman died within six days. Her funeral was also held yesterday. The news naturally further fuels the debate on conscientious objection and end-of-life care, in light of the Constitutional Court's recent decision in the DJ Fabo-Cappato case and the concerns of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte. The woman's decision was not supported by the head of the General Surgery Department at the Piedimonte Matese hospital where she was being treated, who had no choice but to give in to her expressed desire not to receive treatment. However, the elderly woman's family, also Jehovah's Witnesses, supported and defended her decision. "This is what my mother decided," her son told head physician Gianfausto Iarrobino, former president of the Caserta City Council. He recounted the incident on Facebook, discussing suicide and euthanasia, especially at a time when assisted suicide is being hotly debated following the Constitutional Court's ruling, which called for legislative intervention on the issue. "Today I'm sad and furious," says Iarrobino, who then, speaking of the patient, adds: "I would have saved her 100%, but she refused and she died. Her children and relatives were sympathetic to her. I clashed with everyone. In the end, the children were elated, saying: 'Mom, you were great, you taught all the doctors and the entire department a lesson. I ask myself: how can a religion still allow suicide today?'" concludes Iarrobino, who at the end of his story adds the hashtag #eutanasiapiedimontechirurgia#.
