A first step forward has been made with the Senate approval of the bill to combat violence against doctors and healthcare workers. Now there is no turning back and the measure must be definitively approved by the Chamber,” said Pina Onotri, Secretary General of the Italian Doctors Union, commenting on the yes expressed at Palazzo Madama on the bill against violence against doctors and healthcare workers. “In hospitals and medical offices, we have witnessed a repeated series of attacks in recent months; the problem is serious and concerns the entire country. We can no longer allow a place of care to become a scene of attacks and violence. The bill establishes the National Observatory on the safety of healthcare professionals and has among its tasks that of proposing suitable measures to eliminate risk factors in the most exposed medical and healthcare environments; it also increases the penalties for those who commit attacks on doctors during the exercise of their profession. These are protection measures that we consider positive,” adds Onotri.
“We had preferred that together with these norms the DDL recognize the status of public official to doctors in service (contracted and managers), but we will continue our battle on this”. “The path to put an end to the climate of violence that affects doctors and healthcare personnel throughout the country is still long. The SMI will fight to support increasingly effective security measures, to ensure care for patients and full usability for the exercise of medical and healthcare professions throughout the country” concludes Onotri.
