The world's first museum dedicated to the vagina is opening in London. It might seem like a joke or a provocation, but its creators intend to promote health and prevention, especially among young people. The "Vagina Museum," the BBC reports, will open its doors in Camden Market on November 16, thanks to a £50 crowdfunding campaign. It will host art exhibitions, theater performances, seminars, and comedy nights centered on vaginas. It will also offer programs for families and schools to help children feel comfortable talking about female genitalia. "When they're ashamed of their bodies, it becomes really difficult for them to talk about certain things," said the museum's founder, director Florence Schechter, adding that it will be "a fantastic way to spread the message that there's nothing shameful or offensive about vaginas and vulvas." The Vagina Museum has partnered with obstetricians and gynecologists to engage women in conversations about some of the taboos surrounding their health. The cervical cancer charity, Jo's Trust, has found that more than a quarter of 25- to 29-year-olds in Britain feel "too embarrassed" to attend a screening of that part of the body. The organization has therefore applauded the museum's idea: "It will be a huge resource for helping people understand women's health and talk about it more openly." And in addition to sex education, doctors will also be involved to offer support to transgender and intersex people. The exhibition, "Myths about the Vagina and How to Fight Them," will be open on November 16th.
