Marcianise, Italy: "The measures taken by the judicial authorities against two individuals accused, on various counts, of illegal waste management and environmental pollution at a storage site in Marcianise represent an initial step in raising awareness among the community exposed to toxic risks." This was stated in a statement by Senator Vincenzo D'Anna, president of the National Order of Biologists, recalling that on the same soils being investigated by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere (Caserta), "a few days after the seals were placed, a disastrous arson attack broke out." The president of the Biologists added, "Every burning of waste material, especially stored and therefore concentrated, releases enormous quantities of toxic and harmful substances into the environment. Science has identified that these substances, which pollute the air, soil, water, and food, induce epigenetic modifications that can be transmitted to offspring through male gametes." According to D'Anna, "we are facing a serious, silent yet active genetic defect that can compromise the health of future generations, exposing them to the risk of various diseases. Yet awareness of these events is virtually nonexistent, as are screening interventions for the most exposed populations." Hence the ONB president's "dutiful and timely" appeal to national and regional authorities and the media "to intervene as quickly as possible." For his part, D'Anna concludes: "The Order of Biologists is making its own task force of ecotoxicology experts available to the authorities free of charge for all relevant needs."
