"Salvini's visit yesterday to the prison of San Gimignano was accompanied by worrying episodes of protest by groups of inmates from the medium security section who, in addition to beating on the bars, set fire to sheets and objects and damaged furnishings. The situation was managed with great professionalism and responsibility by the prison staff who avoided more serious consequences". This is what the general secretary of the Prison Police Union (SPP) Aldo Di Giacomo reported in a note, highlighting that "what happened is very significant of the climate that is being created in the prisons of the country fueled by the destabilization of the prison system and the delegitimization of the prison staff". "We said it while it was still hot and we repeat it - he adds -: shifting all the media attention to the alleged beatings of prisoners that allegedly took place in the prison of San Gimignano is an operation that contains the risk of delegitimizing all the penitentiary police personnel of the Italian institutions who are already forced to defend themselves from a thousand attacks inside and outside the prison. We are therefore on the side of the agents and before expressing heavy and definitive sentences we await the judicial proceedings".
