A large fire has broken out at a hazardous waste treatment facility in Battipaglia's industrial zone. "Our city," Mayor Cecilia Francese declared, "was awakened by a toxic cloud of burning tires, and initial on-site investigations suggest the fire was arson." The company involved in the blaze recycles discarded tires. The mayor immediately alerted ARPAC, the regional environmental protection agency. "Just two days ago, this facility was inspected for the hazardous waste it handled," the mayor said. Meanwhile, the Penna school buildings and the Ferrari Institute have been closed. "Something shady is happening in Battipaglia. It's a war, and the victims are the citizens who have been suffering in that area for too long." This is how Environment Minister Sergio Costa commented on the large-scale fire that broke out last night at a hazardous waste treatment facility in Battipaglia's industrial zone. "When I met with the citizens on August 24th," Costa added, "I promised them that, if I were reappointed, I would immediately launch a technical discussion. I discussed it with the general management and the technical staff, and today we will begin convening a discussion with the mayors of the area, the Region, the presidents of the Province and Metropolitan City, and, of course, the Ministry." "I ask everyone to come forward with concrete proposals to share," the minister emphasized, "because if public administrators separate and seek differences, we will all lose this war, and those who will pay the highest price will be the defenseless citizens. If we work together, however, we will win."
