Mayor Cecilia Francese signed a new ordinance (number 343) late this afternoon, introducing further measures regarding the serious fire that occurred at a hazardous waste treatment facility located in the city's industrial zone.
Schools will be closed tomorrow, Friday, September 13: the measure is valid for institutes of all levels in Battipaglia, to protect the health of students. Not only that: citizens and businesses within a 1 km radius of the Mgm fire site are required to keep windows and doors closed to avoid contamination of external environments.
The Salerno tricolor band (which in protest blocked the entrance of compactors loaded with garbage into the city's waste dump) has also banned all sports and recreational activities and any other event held outdoors: a real "curfew" for Battipaglia, while waiting for the Arpac investigations to provide evidence of the possible presence of polluting agents that are dangerous for people's health.
In fact, since the first hours of the crisis, the regional company activated a mobile laboratory for monitoring air quality, located about one hundred and fifty meters from the site affected by the fire.
"The mobile laboratory, already used in many similar cases in recent years, monitors the concentrations of various pollutants in the atmosphere, including fine dust and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). Near the mobile laboratory, Arpac - the regional environmental agency reported - also positioned a high-volume air sampler for monitoring and researching dioxins and furans this afternoon. The results provided by these two instruments will be released in the coming days, compatibly with the technical times needed for analytical activities and data processing".
