Castellammare di Stabia. A reckless maneuver, possibly an overtaking maneuver, is thought to be the cause of this morning's accident in the Varano tunnel heading towards Sorrento. Three vehicles and a scooter were involved, with four seriously injured. They were transported to San Leonardo Hospital with critical injuries, and then taken to Cardarelli Hospital in Naples and Ospedale del Mare. The exact circumstances of the accident, however, are still unclear. The tunnel was closed for over three hours to allow traffic police officers to carry out investigations. ANAS and firefighters were also on site. The most seriously injured was a man riding a scooter who found his scooter practically trapped between two cars, and is the most seriously injured of the four. The man is currently hospitalized at Cardarelli Hospital with a guarded prognosis. A young man lost a finger that was severed by the sheet metal of a car. The tunnel closure has caused traffic disruption on some city streets. Traffic jams are reported on the Panoramic Road, Viale delle Puglie, Via Passeggiata Archeologica, and the San Marco Viaduct.
