Italian trademarks are growing, or more precisely, trademark applications, which totaled 39.509 in the first eight months of 2019, a 7,8% increase in five years. According to a study by the Milan, Monza, Brianza, and Lodi Chamber of Commerce, the majority of applications (8.985, or 22% of the total) were filed in Milan, followed at a distance by Rome (5.055), Turin (2.697), and Naples (1.959). But Naples is the city that has shown the most surprising growth, with a 51% increase in five years. A real boom was recorded in various cities in the South and in particular in Sardinia: +356% in Barletta-Andria-Trani (with 228 trademark applications), +128% in Catanzaro (103), +113% in Sassari (150), +233% in Vibo Valentia (40), even +366% in Ogliastra (where however there were only 14 applications) and +280 in Carbonia Iglesias (19). The data were released on the day of the first of three meetings on the fight against trademark counterfeiting (this one on online counterfeiting) organised by the Chamber of Commerce. "This is about combating crimes," explained Luca Bertoni, president of the Provincial Committee for the Fight against Counterfeiting, "that have a profoundly negative impact on the economic and social fabric, both locally and nationally, in terms of lost revenue, tax revenue, lost employment, and the reuse of illicit resources. This damages a healthy and competitive market, with serious repercussions on the safety of workers and consumers."
