Bruno Grandi, honorary president of the International Gymnastics Federation and a longtime official of the Italian Federation, has died at the age of 85. In a statement, the Italian Gymnastics Federation recalled that Grandi was "a sports official who profoundly influenced not only the evolution of gymnastics disciplines, in Italy and around the world, but who was also a prominent figure on the national and Olympic sporting stage." Born in Forlì, Grandi was so in love with his city and his roots that he recently brought a World Cup Acrobatics event and the Gymnastics Museum, which he strongly supported, to the Romagna town. He was an athlete and coach for many years before becoming a sports official. He led the Italian national team in two Olympic Games that, for very different reasons, remain in the collective imagination: Munich '72 and Montreal '76, experiencing firsthand both the horrific terrorist attack by the Palestinian organization Black September in Germany and Nadia Comaneci's stunning "Perfect 10" in Canada. His presidency will remain forever and inextricably linked to the great successes of Jury Chechi, thanks to whom he won his only Olympic medal in 23 years of presidency: the gold medal in the rings at Atlanta 1996.
