On the occasion of the 14th edition of the European Researchers' Night, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii opens the doors to the public of the Applied Research Laboratory with its unique collection of organic finds. On Friday 27 September from 10.00:16.00 to XNUMX:XNUMX the Applied Research Laboratory will be available to the public to tell the scientific activities underway in Pompeii, with the aim of creating informal and stimulating meeting opportunities between researchers and citizens and spreading scientific culture and knowledge of research professions.

The European Researchers' Night 2019 is part of the #ERN18 event, BE a citizEn Scientist (BEES), coordinated by the Frascati Scienza Association, aimed at encouraging citizen participation in scientific research and will be the flagship event of the Science Week 2019, from 21 to 28 September, a seven-day event full of scientific dissemination initiatives.
The Applied Research Laboratory of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, where various specialists are active, is the operational section, a sort of HUB, in which all the possibilities that current science and technology offer us are examined and used to achieve the goal of preserving the archaeological heritage of Pompeii. Conservation, prevention and maintenance interventions on ancient artefacts and structures start, inevitably, from the analysis of the state of conservation of the goods and their environmental conditions of custody, to arrive at the diagnosis through the anamnesis of the causes of degradation through non-invasive and in situ investigations and tests.
In this perspective, the Laboratory has a dual purpose:
– to direct cognitive and diagnostic research on archaeological finds for the reconstruction of the Vesuvian environment before 79 AD;
– to coordinate the scientific activities carried out by Italian and foreign research institutions for the knowledge and conservation of the archaeological site of Pompeii.
It is in fact a place of comparison with the scientific community through participation in specific conservation programs of complex artifacts of exceptional value and maintains collaborative relationships with numerous Italian and foreign research institutes and departments.
