With his visit to Naples today, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier intends to "understand the South." This is according to the German newspaper "Der Tagesspiegel," commenting on Steinmeier's visit to Italy, which began yesterday, September 19, in Rome and will conclude today in the capital of Campania. As reported by "Der Tagesspiegel," to understand Southern Italy, the German president will meet in Naples with representatives of Southern culture, Italians who emigrated to Germany for work between the 1950s and 1970s—the so-called "Gastarbeiter," or "guest workers"—and young people intending to come to the country in search of employment. Steinmeier dedicated a passage to the "Gastarbeiter" in his speech during the press conference with the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella, held yesterday, September 18, at the Quirinale Palace. The "Gastarbeiter," the German president said, are "a bridge" between Italy and Germany and "an invaluable treasure for both states." Steinmeier therefore intends to explore the South and "its prospects, as it is more affected than the North by unemployment and inadequate infrastructure," writes "Der Tagesspiegel." The German president's visit to Italy in Naples was "proposed by Mattarella, himself a Southerner, having been born and raised in Sicily." In Naples, in addition to meeting intellectuals, former "Gastarbeiter," and young people planning to emigrate to Germany, Steinmeier will visit the monumental complex of Santa Chiara and the historic center, particularly the Sanità district, "among the most affected by poverty, unemployment, and crime." In the neighborhood, at the church of Santa Maria della Sanità, the German president will also attend rehearsals of the Sanitansemble youth orchestra.
