Inspections in the Battipaglia area "will be extremely rigorous to protect the health of residents," said Vincenzo De Luca, President of the Campania Regional Council, speaking about the fire that broke out yesterday in Battipaglia at a hazardous waste treatment facility. De Luca emphasized that this is a harassed area, and for this reason, "it seems reasonable to me to have a law that blocks new developments." There will be no more waste treatment facilities in Battipaglia (Salerno), where yesterday a large fire broke out at a hazardous waste treatment facility. This is the call for a "policy document" signed today by Mayor Cecilia Francese, the Municipality, the Province of Salerno, and the Salerno Area Authority. Yesterday's fire raised alarm among the population; some residents yesterday staged a sit-in in front of the Stir (incineration plant), where solid urban waste is treated. "This is a first, tepid step," the mayor wrote on his Facebook page, referring to the policy document, "to ensure recognition at the provincial and regional levels that our city has an agricultural vocation." Certainly, it will not be possible to proceed with "any expansion of existing sites. This is one of the objectives we set ourselves and have achieved. We will now monitor the measures that the Provincial Council first and then the Campania Region will have to approve to protect our city. I also await the official convocation by the Prefecture of the Committee for Public Order and Safety so that we can create synergy to prevent and combat degenerative phenomena," Francese added. According to the mayor, "collaboration between institutions was what interested us and is the only way to govern the territory. Health and the environment are our priority, and we will do so in agreement with the supra-municipal bodies."
