Battipaglia fire: mayor blocks treatment plant

“The city is under siege. A siege permitted by others but which today can no longer be tolerated and sustained. The cost to be paid by my people is very high and I am no longer willing to wait for who knows what. It is clear that there is a criminal plan to bury this land under waste and poison it with stench”. This was stated by the mayor of Battipaglia (SALERNO) Cecilia Francese a few hours after yet another fire that occurred in the industrial area. For this reason, the mayor of Battipaglia has decided to block the Stir plant for waste treatment and says “enough”. “After yet another fire, we move on to extreme actions, actions that go beyond administrative actions. I do not want to create a waste problem in the region, but if this can be the only way for someone from the Region to come and talk to me and the city, we are also willing to do this. We block the entrance of trucks. We will move when someone from the Region, president or vice president, comes to talk to us and reassures us by reviewing the waste plan".
“If you want the inconvenience to be eliminated, you have to come here”. So said the mayor of Battipaglia (SALERNO) Cecilia Francese who, in front of the gates of the Stir waste treatment plant, in a telephone conversation with the president of the Province, Michele Strianese, said: “I don't agree. Blocking the Stir is the only way to get you off your chair and come here”. The citizens present echo her, applauding and claiming that “they won't move from there”.
