Sarno. Seven young people, six minors and one adult, all local, are under investigation for setting fires on the Saretto hill in Sarno. The group was caught on camera by local surveillance cameras. So far, the Nocera Inferiore Public Prosecutor's Office has not arrested anyone. This morning, the investigation was opened, entrusting the investigation to the Carabinieri of the Sarno station and the Nocera Inferiore company. Several searches were also conducted throughout the day. Initial suspicions fell on two minors. Subsequent investigations identified other suspected perpetrators. However, the investigation by the Nocera Inferiore Public Prosecutor's Office, coordinated by Deputy Prosecutor Annachiara Fasano, continues. The first person to be arrested is 16 years old and, supported by social workers, collapsed under the investigators' pressing questions. Confined by surveillance cameras and two key witnesses, smoke- and flame-stained clothing was found in their homes. The young man, of South American origin, explained that they were joking. The young men under investigation belong to well-known families in the city, some of whom have rather complex histories. The individual suspects are being examined by Prosecutor Angelo Frattini of the Salerno Juvenile Prosecutor's Office and Deputy Prosecutor Anna Chiara Fasano of the Nocera Inferiore Prosecutor's Office. "The evidence currently gathered, derived from technical surveys carried out in the area, the seizure of items pertinent to the crime, and the gathering of information, provides a significant circumstantial evidence regarding the actual involvement of the aforementioned group of young men in the origin of the fire," a statement from the Carabinieri provincial command states. Investigators are working to establish the possible motive and to verify, in detail, who actually participated in the arson attack, whether those who committed the arson or were merely present. The investigation is being conducted by the Carabinieri of the Nocera Inferiore Territorial Unit, supported by the Carabinieri Forestry Corps.
The great fear has now passed but for many hours the fire front on Mount Saretto kept the population of Sarno in suspense. A fire of particularly large dimensions: for the Minister of the Environment, Sergio Costa, who activated the machinery necessary to secure the territory, it is an "obvious malicious matrix and for this reason it cannot remain unpunished. A wicked act that puts a highly unstable territory at serious hydrogeological risk". The town experienced moments of great tension for hours. The mayor of Sarno, Giuseppe Canfora, yesterday evening had invited "citizens to keep their windows closed and to go out only in case of necessity". The precautionary closure of schools was ordered, citizens living near the piedmont area, affected by the fire, were forced to leave their homes and go either to family and friends, or alternatively to the Baccelli Institute in via Matteotti, where they were able to spend the night in safety. About 200 people were displaced and then returned to their homes yesterday, while school activities will resume regularly on Monday in all schools of all levels. The mayor has requested the intervention of the Army to patrol the foothills during this period and will file a complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office to request a state of natural disaster since 90% of the pine forest has been destroyed.
