Trafficking of waste from Italy to South East Asia. The topic was discussed at the Polieco Forum, where the Malaysian minister responsible for the management of plastic materials, Zuraida Binti Kamaruddin, spoke. After the import ban by China, the flows have changed destination and Malaysia, together with Thailand and Vietnam, is one of the new destinations for waste leaving Italian ports.
“There is no prejudice against the import of plastic waste, which can be an economic opportunity for our country,” said the representative of the Malaysian government, “however, the mismanagement of plastic waste worries us a lot, because we must ensure that there are no dirty materials and controls must be tight.”
The minister did not say she was against exports, but spoke of strict measures: "We only authorize the entry of homogeneous materials, but the problem arises when there are dishonest companies that export with falsified codes and then, to prevent illegal circuits, there is a need to make responsible agreements with the countries that send the waste".
The Malaysian minister, in a meeting on the sidelines of the forum, met with the director Claudia Salvestrini, the president Enrico Bobbio of Polieco and the senator Salvatore Micillo, former undersecretary for the Environment, who will transfer to Minister Costa the proposal of a table aimed at monitoring the flows from Italy to Malaysia, so as to build a model that can be "replicated also for other countries".
"The network of illegal waste trafficking - Salvestrini underlined - has widened and often insinuates itself into legal circuits, hence the need for increasingly effective monitoring and control. Protecting legal exports means supporting ethical business and pursuing paths that do not lead to transforming other countries into the world's dustbins".
The Forum was also attended by the leader of the opposition group in the Albanian parliament, Kujtim Gujiuzi, who denounced the presence of radioactive waste that arrived in his country through exports, and the Deputy Minister of the Environment of Albania, Ornela Cuci, who illustrated her government's choices regarding waste management.
