They will be taking action early in the morning wearing the traditional "uniform" of hat, gloves, bib, and bag. Over 5000 students of all ages will be taking part tomorrow, Friday, September 20, in the first day of Clean Up the World, the environmental volunteering campaign organized in Italy by Legambiente. This year's three-day event will see the participation of over 20 volunteers throughout Campania, working to restore the environment in over 200 areas. Leading the way are the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Parks and the Vesuvius National Park.

Returning degraded areas of our cities to common use; raising awareness among citizens about waste abandonment, a practice that is still too widespread in all cities; cleaning up parks, stations, schoolyards, roadsides, river banks; telling about the circular economy, which is already partly a reality but which few know about; promoting social inclusion and breaking down prejudices, starting with xenophobia, fighting the fears that prevent us from building community relationships. Let's Clean Up the World is all this, and much more. The event will take place from 20 to 22 September and is sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment, Land and Sea Protection, the Ministry of Education, University and Research, UPI, Federparchi and Unep; it is organized in collaboration with the European Commission.

Responsible citizenship, starting with schools, whose participation is dedicated to Friday 20 September with the municipalities of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park as protagonists, as well as the Vesuvius National Park, where students, together with many groups of volunteers, will be involved in cleaning paths and recreational areas.

"In recent years - says Francesca Ferro, director of Legambiente Campania - attention and sensitivity to environmental issues and the desire to contribute with concrete actions to the protection of the territory have increased among citizens. Over the years, Clean Up the World has been an opportunity to talk about suburbs, urban regeneration, sharing, citizen protagonism, social hardship, civic virtue, food waste, peace, legality. Clean Up the World, in short, is a battle of civilization. For this reason, we could not help but broaden it, for a few years, to the battle against the prejudices that are polluting civil coexistence in our country and jeopardizing the principle that human rights are everyone's rights"

The main event of Clean Up the World will be broadcast live on Rai3 on Sunday 22 September in Naples, in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood, where the initiative is organised in collaboration with the Fondazione Famiglia di Maria and includes the cleaning of the square in front of the Foundation, which a few days ago was the victim of a vile act of intimidation: some gunshots were fired against the entrance door. The Famiglia Di Maria organisation operates in the area of East Naples, implementing local educational activities for minors and families with socio-economic difficulties; there are several projects dedicated to the mothers of the neighbourhood and initiatives of commitment to legality promoted in collaboration with Libera and Legambiente.
