She left home with her son yesterday afternoon. She got on board her Opel Corsa and from Quadrelle, a small town in the Baianese area, on the border between Avellino and Nola, she headed towards Benevento, then took the state road 372 Telesina and perhaps reached her home town. The Carabinieri of the Benevento provincial command have been working non-stop since last night to determine what happened between the moment a 34-year-old woman, who investigators believe is responsible for killing her 4-month-old son, left her partner and the house in Quadrelle and last midnight, when she was found at the bottom of a slope, with her dead son at her side. It is now clear that the woman killed her son, first by throwing him off a cliff and rolling him down for seven meters and then by beating his little body with a wooden stick, until she smashed his head and lost consciousness. It was not easy for the military and for the deputy prosecutor of the Benevento court, Vincenzo Toscano, to interpret the few elements found at the bottom of the slope and along the Telesina state road, near Solopaca. There was the Opel Corsa with one door open, which ended up against the guard rail. Everything pointed to an accident. The woman, who fell into the ravine, recovered, but was in a very emotional state. He was unable to answer the soldiers' questions. Then it was realized that she is deaf and dumb. The woman was identified thanks to documents and her personal details matched those contained in a missing persons report that a 32-year-old man from Quadrelle had filed with the Carabinieri of the Baiano company, in the province of Avellino, a few hours earlier. The man, who showed up at the Irpinia barracks, was worried about his partner and son. He couldn't get in touch with her, reported the woman's disability and asked for help in finding her family. Slowly some pieces of the story have fallen into place. The injuries to the child's head, according to an initial external examination of the little body, were not compatible with a fall. And not far from the child there was a piece of wood covered in blood. The mother was taken to the hospital in Banevento by a 118 ambulance, escorted by a patrol of the Carabinieri who are still guarding the room where the 34-year-old is undergoing therapy necessary in cases of strong emotional alteration. She was briefly interviewed with the help of a sign language interpreter, but her condition is expected to improve, also because she will be transferred to prison. She is being investigated for voluntary homicide. Investigators have no doubts about this, but the motive remains to be understood. The possibility of an argument with her partner a few hours before the crime has not been ruled out, but an attempt will be made to further evaluate the woman's mental state, which could be postpartum depression. Further information may emerge from the interrogations that the Carabinieri have been conducting since last night within the couple's family circle.
