“In this month of September in Naples, with so many beautiful things in the city, there are quite a few critical issues, and for this reason maximum commitment, hard work and sacrifice from everyone is necessary”: this is how the post published this morning by Luigi de Magistris, mayor of Naples, begins. “As an administration – continues the mayor – we have decided on some actions that you will see and that we believe can contribute to improving services and the quality of life. However, everyone’s contribution is essential. The strength, power and image of Naples, thanks to the work done in recent years, has grown a lot, but there is still a lot of work to do on services. We must improve, now, not tomorrow. I am charged and highly motivated to work, without stopping, to make Naples, by the end of my mandate, an increasingly beautiful and livable place. On the night between Saturday and Sunday – explains de Magistris – from midnight to three, I was among the workers of Asia, our 100% public company that deals with waste collection. As always, being on the street a lot, my visit was unannounced. I have been on the streets of San Giovanni, Scampia and Centro Storico. There is so much suffering, the closure of the Acerra incinerator for 35 days requires a secular miracle to avoid crisis and emergency. 80.000 tons of waste must be treated in an alternative way. The criminal hands, the cheap politicians, some irresponsible media and those who seek visibility to demonstrate their existence in life, are eager for emergency. They do not care that it would be a disaster for our territories and for our health. But the emergency party will not win! We have saved Asia, made it safe and strengthened it; we have hired and will hire; we have not fired anyone, except those who have betrayed with very serious conduct”.
The mayor of Naples then explains that "there are things that are not working, actions that need to be improved, organization that needs to be perfected, but Asia will be able to find, with teamwork, the best solutions in the interest of our city". "We are always here - adds de Magistris -. I have seen workers, around 60 years old, carry out very hard work, with dignity, strength and care, among piles of garbage, selecting and collecting. An enormous effort. Heavy just to watch. We have seen for the umpteenth time that too many people still do not separate, everything is thrown away and many even come from other municipalities to dump in Naples. Unfortunately, incivility is still too widespread. Last night the workers were not only collecting waste, but with an activity that could become alienating, they were indignant about what was found inside them, they were angry about some commercial activities that dump without rules, they were angry about the carelessness of many (perhaps graduates and with their noses in the air, because if you open the bags, which is what you do, your identity is revealed). The gentlemen I was with last night, while working, really have their noses in the air and possess a dignity that is not acquired with a degree. Fines are issued and will be issued, but it is not enough, everyone's commitment is needed! Let's move forward, always forward, with team spirit, competence, professionalism and passion. We will fight - concludes de Magistris - to win the small and large battles, especially those of civilization for the love of our City".
