The Mayor of Naples Luigi de Magistris has presented a plaque to the former Dutch defender of Napoli Ruud Krol in recognition of his brilliant career as captain of the Neapolitan team. “It is a recognition to a great football champion, but also to a man linked to our city in an unforgettable role which was that of libero” said the mayor of Naples. “Krol has marked the history of international football and also that of our city. His arrival came at a difficult time for Napoli, but he contributed to Napoli reaching the top”. It is a shame that they did not cross paths with Maradona, another champion who arrived later. “It is a shame, but they would have been a perfect pair, Krol would have made many throws for Maradona”. “I did not expect this recognition – said the former Azzurri defender – I spent four beautiful years of my life in Naples”. The award presented by Mayor de Magistris is a sign of "deep gratitude and infinite affection for his brilliant sporting life, as a great footballer, as an undisputed champion who left an indelible mark in the hearts of Neapolitan fans". The plaque also highlights "the charisma exercised inside and outside the game" and Krol's ability to be an "example for young people for his technical skills and human solidarity". Krol, a footballing life spent wearing the Ajax jersey, arrived in Naples in 1980 and remained there until 1984. "The experience in Naples - the two-time world vice-champion underlined - was a very good and important experience in my footballing life, it's a shame that we didn't win and that those years passed so quickly but, even today, in my memory I have a beautiful memory of that period".
