Naples. Fifteen robberies involving minors in less than a week. This news story sparked the idea of organizing a protest of parents, especially mothers, meeting in front of the subway station on Via Salvator Rosa in Naples. The demonstration was organized by the coordination of mothers of minors who were victims of violent predatory crimes. A sit-in was held in Piazza Canneto, Piazza Leonardo, Via Salvator Rosa, and Via Giacinto Gigante, the streets where the robberies occurred. "We must never underestimate incidents of petty crime or assume that predatory crimes against minors are of lesser importance. Organized crime grows when petty crime occurs," say the mothers of the coordination. They were joined by Carabinieri Commander Giuseppe La Gala and Police Commissioner Alessandro Giuliano, who spoke with the parents and attempted to reassure them. The idea is to further strengthen local controls in a buffer zone between the Cavone and Arenella rivers. The choice of location for the sit-in was not a coincidence. The coordination committee urged people "not to underestimate petty crime and to consider the fact that predatory crimes against minors are no less serious." Among those in the square today was Maria Luisa Iavarone, mother of Arturo, who was stabbed in the throat in Naples a week before Christmas, when he was 17, almost two years ago. "If we nip robbers in the bud," says Iavarone, president of the Artur Association, "we'll prevent another criminal from hitting the streets tomorrow." "We're always told that other priorities lie ahead," she says, "and it almost seems as if these robberies are being downgraded to minor crimes, but they aren't." For this reason, Iavarone says, "I really appreciated that the commander of the Naples Carabinieri, Giuseppe La Gala, and the police commissioner, Alessandro Giuliano, came to the demonstration." "Their presence was a great response," Iavarone explains, "because I firmly believe that dialogue with those involved in safety is essential, and it also sends a message to the kids that the institutions are there for them." Iavarone was invited by the mothers on the committee to participate. "I immediately supported their initiative," she adds. "A demonstration like today's is also necessary to convey the idea that it's not pointless to make your voice heard." "Many kids joined us as we left school; there were many mothers and fathers," she concludes. "It was a concrete demonstration of active citizenship."
