Naples. A 65-year-old tourist visiting Naples was robbed of his wallet after being followed by four individuals. The pickpockets worked as a group, like a veritable "paranza" (fishing gang): they distracted the victim by creating a ruckus until they deftly stole his wallet without him noticing. This strategy and their superior numbers allowed them to exploit the group's strength to ensure their own impunity, should the victim notice the theft and react. The transition from pickpockets to robbers is instantaneous. The modus operandi involves following the "prey" into crowded areas, aboard a bus or train, surrounding them, taking advantage of the crowd, and skillfully pushing them to distract them from the swift action of the person who, with professional skill, snatches their wallet. Yesterday, however, the pickpockets' gang was dismantled by Railway Police officers who noticed the activity and followed the criminals from a distance. So when the pickpockets staged their "show" aboard bus 151, managing to open the victim's fanny pack and steal his wallet containing €580, the Railway Police intervened and arrested them. The four—a woman, AA, 58, and three men, SDM, 48, SA, 55, and GP, 45—are all Neapolitan and already known to law enforcement with specific criminal records. Tried through the fast-track trial, they were all sentenced to one year and four months in prison and placed under house arrest.
