Naples. With work completed on the Via Marina tramway, Naples has reopened its coastal line, from San Giovanni a Teduccio to Piazza Municipio. After a three-year hiatus due to the Via Marina resurfacing, the ANM (Naples Transport Company) began testing the vehicles this morning. For the past three years, they have been stored at the San Giovanni depot and maintained by ANM workers. "Work began yesterday," explains tramway operations manager Pierpaolo Martino, "when we placed no-parking signs to inform residents of Corso San Giovanni that the tram was about to restart. Residents respected the ban, and we began testing: at 8:30 a.m., the first tram ran from Corso San Giovanni to Ponte dei Francesi and on to Marina dei Gigli. We tested the functionality of the line and the precise spacing of the tracks, which are new. We also verified the power consumption in a series of tests that will continue over the next few days." After the testing phase, the USTIF tests, required by law, will begin, and within a month and a half, service will resume. During these three years of disruption, the trams have been maintained at the San Giovanni depot, where there are a few meters of track, but now they must be thoroughly tested on the street. ANM has a fleet of 22 Sirio trams and 18 older CTK trams, which have undergone extensive renovations in recent years and have been brought up to current regulations. The older trams, refurbished, will also be back in service, allowing residents and tourists to experience the charm of Naples's transportation history. "ANM," explains sole director Nicola Pascale, "strongly believes in the commitment to electric mobility. Today, the trams left for testing, and we'll soon see them back on the road. By Christmas, Naples will have its fully electric coastal transport line back, with new tracks and a brand-new road built by the city administration. We've kept the vehicles in good condition over the past three years, and now we're ready to start again. Still on the subject of electric mobility, we plan to relaunch it with the major project on Viale Colli Aminei, increasing the trolleybus network by 11 km."
