The mother of the newborn baby found dead last Monday afternoon in a bush between the orchards of Lana and Cermes in South Tyrol has been arrested and is under guard at the Merano hospital. She is a Polish woman who was busy picking apples. An autopsy will be performed today, as ordered by the Bolzano Public Prosecutor's Office, and investigations will continue to reconstruct the events. The lifeless body of a baby boy, still with the umbilical cord attached and his head wrapped in a cloth, was found by German tourists on Monday around 4:30 PM along Via Raffein, not far from the Gloegglkeller restaurant. The Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed that "the child's body showed signs of violence," and therefore strangulation has not been ruled out. The baby was most likely born and died within a few hours of each other. Informed by the tourist couple, the farmer from the nearby Oswald Verdorfer farm raised the alarm.
