Seed oil made similar to extra virgin olive oil by adding substances such as chlorophyll and beta-carotene, obtaining a high illicit profit. Thus, a fraud discovered by the NAS of Florence between Tuscany and Puglia led to the house arrest of two people in Cerignola (in the province of Foggia) and Montespertoli (in the province of Florence) for laundering and receiving stolen goods of large quantities of seed oil fraudulently labeled as extra virgin olive oil. Two other individuals from Impruneta and Castelfiorentino were notified of a six-month ban from engaging in business activities in the food trade. The investigation, coordinated by the Florence prosecutor's office, has placed 10 other suspects (14 in total), including seven front men. The investigations were conducted in the provinces of Barletta-Andria-Trani, Florence, Foggia, Pescara, Pisa, and Prato. The seed oil was modified with substances that were not harmful to health in Puglia and released into Tuscan food sector commercial circuits (bars, restaurants, bakeries, wholesalers).
