Hundreds of Avellino residents will be evacuated to allow the deactivation of a high-explosive bomb from World War II, discovered a few weeks ago under the Ponte della Ferriera during aqueduct repairs. The procedures were initiated this morning during a meeting chaired by Avellino Prefect Maria Tirone, with Civil Protection and law enforcement, which will be followed by further meetings. "The Avellino community," the prefect emphasized, "will be kept constantly informed of the date and procedures of the evacuation. The scope of the evacuation will be determined only after the intervention of the Army Engineers from Caserta." The Ponte della Ferriera is located in the center of the Irpinia capital. The area where the device is located, which has been covered by a thick layer of earth, is off-limits and under surveillance.
