A diary in which a young woman from Scafati recorded the events, thoughts, and doubts of her life from 1942 to 1945. "Pane Bianco" by Antonietta Ferrara will be presented at the Sala Don Bosco in Scafati (Piazza Vittorio Veneto) on Saturday, September 28th at 5:30 pm. This presentation/event, coordinated by Pasquale Formisano, will feature a presentation by Domenico D'Alessandro, the principal of Scafati's Caccioppoli High School. Several "days" from the young author's diary will be read by Elena Fiorenza and Domenico Maria Corrado, accompanied by violinist Ilario Ruopolo, alternating with musical performances by Rosanna Monsurrò (voice) and Gabriella Marolda (piano).
The date chosen for the presentation is not a coincidence: September 28, 1943 is in fact the day of the liberation of the city, the day in which "daring Scafati people" took up arms to accelerate the expulsion of the Germans, preventing the main bridge over the Sarno from collapsing. For this episode Scafati was awarded the gold medal for the Resistance and, in this regard, the exhibition of the ANPI of Scafati "Berardino Fienga" section will be set up, dedicated to that glorious day in which the city was liberated: September 28, 1943. And the diary is a journey towards freedom. It is a precious historical document, which allows us to reconstruct the facts, which presents the face of Scafati, which is at the same time the symbol of those many cities of our South. It is also a true coming-of-age novel, which accompanies the growth of the protagonist during the terrible days of the war, the bombs, the misery. The girl confident in the “magnificent and progressive fortunes” that the regime promised, gradually becomes a girl who questions her own conscience and through doubts and studies, tries to arrive at new interpretations of reality.
Around her, a country devastated by the loss of war, the mournful sound of sirens announcing the bombings, the collapsed buildings and the voices of women, men and children suffering from hunger and waiting for a peace that seems increasingly distant. Young Antonietta is a girl, suffering from hunger, like everyone else. Alongside the hope of a better society, she cultivates a mirage, a golden sun in the dawns of the pressing days: a white, fragrant bread. The allies, it was said, should have distributed it in abundance, but it remained only an illusion and people continued to eat black bread made of corn.
White bread and black bread, war and peace, the myths of fascism and the ideals of democracy, wealth and poverty: many are the poles of this extraordinary testimony. a diary of a girl from Scafati, Antonietta Ferrara, who records the events between 1942 and 1945.
In moments of general disorientation, the young Antonietta tries to take a path, even if it is difficult to follow, with the sole help of her reflections, her readings and her studies. School would accompany her throughout her life: she emotionally recounts, in a page of her diary, when, very young, she had around her, in her study, her little cousins whom she taught. The emotion of "doing school" never abandoned her and she studied, even after retirement. She continued, every now and then, in moments of melancholy, to quote that verse noted several times in her diary, when she had recently learned Greek: life, onar tes schias, the dream of a shadow! Among the many shadows of her doubts and questions, she wanted to give to her city and her students, this testimony that does not deserve to be consigned to oblivion because it can still teach consciences a lot.
