It is an eye disease that causes the cornea to thin and deform, it can start as early as puberty and if it is not diagnosed immediately it is difficult to cure except with a corneal transplant. It is keratoconus, a problem that is rarely talked about but that can lead to blindness. In Italy there are on average about 54,5 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and every year 1000 to 2000 cases are added. These are data that have led ophthalmologists to create a large information and prevention campaign for keratoconus throughout Italy that, starting today, will last a month and will end on October 11th. Promoting it are in particular the University of Verona, the National Center for High Technology in Ophthalmology of the University of Chieti-Pescara, the Camo (Centro Ambrosiano Oftalmico), in collaboration with Neovision and with the patronage of the Italian Keratoconic Association (Aiche), the Italian Ophthalmological Society (Soi) and the Italian Corneal Transplant Society (Sitrac). It will be an initiative that will involve dozens of centers throughout the country, for which the patronage of the Ministry of Health and the Veneto Region has been requested. For a month, specialists from 18 Centers distributed across the country (from Bologna to Chieti, from Verona to Naples, from Milan to Catanzaro) will visit patients who have booked on the website www.curagliocchi.it and at all the facilities involved, free of charge, with the aim of not only diagnosing this disease but also and more generally to inform citizens about an eye disorder that can lead to serious consequences for sight.
