“Every time it's like rubbing salt in the wounds.” Marta Della Corte, daughter of Francesco Della Corte, a security guard killed on March 13, 2018 outside the Piscinola station of the Naples subway while commenting on the news of the permits that the newly eighteen-year-old Ciro U., one of the three young men convicted of the murder of his father, would have benefited from, in addition to the one already documented to celebrate his 18th birthday. “Where do we find the strength to go on? We make an effort every day – writes Marta Della Corte on Facebook – we look for it in our family, in our grandmother's eyes, we look for it in my father's drawers, in his teachings, but while we look for it we come across this. We come across photos of a killer celebrating, we come across the news that he went to try out for a soccer team. Then that already difficult job becomes even more difficult, because every time it's like pouring salt on the wounds. Let's hope that all this remains just an ugly, very ugly page in this story, that my father can return to rest in peace knowing that at least justice has been done. Without ifs and buts, for me he must serve 16 and a half years in prison. The rights of prisoners are increasingly supported, while those of the victims and families of those who were killed are trampled underfoot. This is not about the rehabilitation of the prisoner but about ridiculous behavior: even the footballer? It's madness and I can't accept it", he says. The family of Francesco Della Corte "legitimately feels a very strong pain: they will never be able to understand the re-educational function of the sentence" but "Ciro is a person in whom we can and must invest". This is how lawyer Nicola Pomponio, the lawyer of the 18-year-old convicted of the murder of the security guard, responds to those who contest the decision to grant the young man permission to take a football trial as part of a re-education program. “He has no criminal record,” he recalls, “he has never shown any criminal tendencies, he has never smoked, he has never drunk alcohol. He committed a brutal crime, it’s true, but he was above suspicion. His family would never have expected him to commit such acts.” According to lawyer Pomponio, “repentance can be expressed in various ways: in a dramatic manner, with a letter of apology, or by undertaking a course that uses educators and psychologists, thanks to which, once the sentence has been served, he will be able to reintegrate into society.”
