The temporary exhibition “Stonewall the temple” by artist Vito Fusco opened on September 12 at the Correale Museum, with the exceptional godfather Alessandro Cecchi Paone.
The exhibition, which is part of the events linked to Sorrento Pride, is supported by the consolidated synergy between the Arcigay Antinoo Committee of Naples and the Consulate General of the United States in Naples, and is proposed, fifty years after the Stonewall riots, as an extraordinary opportunity to renew the bond of friendship and solidarity between two cultures that have always been dedicated to the promotion of democratic principles and rights, first and foremost the right to happiness.
“We are happy to participate in this great celebration of civilization by hosting the temporary exhibition of the artist Vito Fusco – declared President Gaetano Mauro – The Correale Museum is a place of culture and love and no form of unconstitutional discrimination can take root where there is culture. Furthermore, on Saturday 14 September, the Correale Museum will dress up in rainbow colors by displaying the rainbow flag at its entrance”.
“It’s the first time I’ve visited the Correale Museum,” said journalist Alessandro Cecchi Paone, “and I must say that this is an extraordinary place, as well as being led by an enlightened president who has been able to understand and enhance this exhibition dedicated to the Stonewall events.” “For me, who am originally from Positano,” added photographer Vito Fusco, “it’s a pleasure to be here and exhibit here. The historic hospitality of the Sorrentines was confirmed by the welcome shown to me by the Correale Museum staff, even during the set-up phase.”
The inauguration ended with a toast with the organizers of Sorrento Pride and the cutting of the rainbow-colored cake. The exhibition, included in the museum ticket, can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday until September 20, 2019, during the opening hours indicated on the website www.museocorreale.it.
Notes on the exhibition
“Stonewall is a temple, an incredible place… The people who visit this bar during Gay Pride week are many, and they mix with the regulars who frequent it to play the “neighborhood” pool tournament. The stories, the sexual gender and the age are very different, but they have in common a great propensity to accept this diversity, to enjoy it. One of the bartenders was present in the place on the night of June 28, 1969. He calls himself Tree Sequoia, and he is 77 years old. He loves to entertain the customers with stories and at every Gay Pride many televisions line up to interview him. The bar opens at 14 pm and closes late at night. I stayed there, the whole week before the parade, to photograph the people and their stories, in the back corner of the place with the most beautiful light I have ever seen. Hours spent talking to the people portrayed, listening to their story, before trying to capture it with a photo. Talking to a boy for more than an hour, smoking a cigarette, having a drink and then discovering that until the year before he was a girl; meeting a married university professor with children discovered by his wife watching a gay erotic film; photographing a straight man who was accompanying his best friend; spending hours among families with two mothers... and seeing hundreds of people passing in front of the Temple to pay homage to this place, this crossroads, which gave the world a new direction.” (from the Prologue of the Book of the Exhibition “Stonewall: The Temple” sponsored by Amnesty International).
