“Monday's meeting of the Terra dei Fuochi commission gave us the opportunity to learn from the commissioner some interesting data, which we had been requesting for some time. Since the beginning of the year, there have been 30 arrests for phenomena related to waste fires. This is an increase, 37 percent more than in previous years. The determining factor for making the fight against the phenomenon effective is, however, linked to convictions. How many of those arrested are actually convicted? How many end up in prison? This data is not yet known but it will be necessary to acquire it shortly to have a clearer picture. Furthermore, compared to the seriousness of the phenomenon, the number of arrests seems truly small”. This is what regional councilor of the Greens and member of the Terra dei Fuochi commission Francesco Emilio Borrelli said. “The flight plans for the new drones were discussed regarding operational strategies. Currently, only two are constantly active, owned by the army and the air force. We are waiting for the use of the new vehicles from Sma Campania. The flight plans will have to focus on the nomad camps where the criminals bring the waste, paying the occupants to dispose of it by setting it on fire. From the data that have been sent to us, among other things, it emerges that the fires of waste as is are increasing while those involving industrial waste are decreasing. As regards the commitment of the municipalities, the idea that we share with the Terra dei Fuochi police station is to hire seasonal agents to be employed in the environmental operational units of the municipal police forces to make the control of the territory more effective”.
