Battipaglia. A mayoral ordinance designates a "red zone" within which all activities are suspended. The burning tires and the plume of black smoke from the burning tires have prompted the Municipality to issue an ordinance closing all businesses, schools, and homes within a one-kilometer radius of the epicenter, located in the industrial zone. The ordinance, reported by the Battipaglia Civil Protection Department, reads as follows: "Residents are advised that following the fire that struck a tire disposal company early this morning, a mayoral ordinance has been issued closing all businesses, schools, and homes within a one-kilometer radius. They are advised to keep windows closed and, if necessary, thoroughly wash vegetables and clothes exposed outside. The fire is intense black smoke and burning tires, making it highly dangerous. Therefore, the Enzo Ferrari and Sandro Penna schools, and all those dependent on them, have been closed today." Just before 9 a.m., the mayor made public what, in truth, all Battipaglia residents (and beyond) already knew: "Mayor order for the closure and suspension of activities today (September 12) at the 'Sandro Penna' comprehensive school and the 'Enzo Ferrari' high school. A new fire has broken out at a company that handles hazardous waste. Battipaglia was awakened last night by a fire involving burning tires inside a company that handles tire recovery and disposal."
