The shaman from Russia's Yakutia who last spring led an anti-Putin march "to oust Putin from the Kremlin" was stopped by several dozen men in uniform, armed, and masked. The commando raided last night a camp set up by Alexander Gabyshev and the small group of his supporters who began following him along the route, near the town of Vydrino, in the Buryatia region of Siberia, not far from Lake Baikal. Russian forces sent Gabyshev back to Yakutia, where, as police explained, he is "wanted for committing a crime." Gabyshev, 51, is originally from Sakha, where he began his journey, had anticipated that it would take him two years to reach Moscow. He views Putin as "an emanation of dark forces" against whom only the powers of a shaman can do anything. On his 2-kilometer journey so far, he has met and spoken with dozens of truck drivers and other travelers. Videos of these encounters are garnering millions of views on social media. Earlier this month, Buryatia shamans, members of the Tengeri organization, attempted to stop him, saying that if he continued his journey to Moscow, he would no longer be considered a shaman. Gabyshev had avoided crossing the regional capital, Ulan-Ude, after being banned by his "colleagues," but continued his march, even though police detained some of his supporters in the city. For this reason, on September 9, several hundred people took to the streets to protest both the rigged victory of pro-Kremlin candidate Igor Shutenkov and to demand the release of the shaman's supporters. Shutenkov defeated the Communist Party candidate, Vyacheslav Markhaev, who had criticized the violent intervention of law enforcement against the Moscow protests over the summer. Markhaev also participated in the spontaneous protest in Ulan-Ude. In July, in the city of Chita, 700 people gathered to welcome the shaman with the slogan "Russia without Putin." "God told me that Putin is not human, but a demon. Wherever he arrives, there are cataclysms and acts of terrorism. Therefore, God ordered me to go and kick him out. Once he's gone, there will be a thousand years of peace and prosperity," he said, wearing a Che Guevara T-shirt, assuring them that he intended to proceed with his mission only through peaceful means.
