A series of banners appeared during the night to say stop to pollution. It is a protest organized by Potere al Popolo that in seven strategic points of the province of Salerno has posted a white sheet with a message to say no to poisons. The initiative opens the Climate Action Week. In Salerno, the banner appeared at the Crescent to ask for a stop to wild concreting. In Cava de' Tirreni the request is the remediation of asbestos in the Maddalena and San Martino areas. In Fisciano and Battipaglia the protest is against the fires. In Nocera Inferiore the request is to block the spills and the remediation of the Sarno river in addition to the blocking of the mining activities from the Montalbino quarry. Also in Sarno, hit by the recent fire, it is urgent to make the affected wooded areas safe. Both maintain the same class relations and exploitation unchanged. “For us, the ecological struggle in the territories translates into battles against the senseless use of natural resources; against the speculation and plundering of the physical, cultural and social heritage of cities, suburbs and countryside by economic market forces and real estate income; against the loss of fertility and biodiversity; against illegality and corruption that in the mismanagement of the environment have found fertile ground to expand, committing an increasing number of environmental crimes”, comments Erminia Maiorino, head of the Environment Commission and member of the national coordination of Potere al Popolo. The protest also aims to hit “the release of non-metabolizable toxic waste that undermines the health of all living beings in the name of a presumed modernity or growth. And therefore against all the useless large-scale works, emblems of this development model. “We demand programs and investments for the ecological transition of the economy that respect the principles of social, environmental and climate justice. Only a radical socio-economic transformation can bring different prospects for the future of this planet. But we do not accept that it is still the poorest, the weakest and those who have contributed least to this state of affairs, with the complicity of a political class that is unable to give an adequate response to an epochal problem, who pay the costs - adds Davide Trezza of the national coordination of Potere al Popolo - We believe that the fight for the climate is the same fight for social justice". A mobilization has been called for September 27 in Salerno.
