On September 20, Sophia Loren will blow out 85 candles, and to mark the occasion, Sky Cinema Collection is offering, from Friday the 20th to Friday the 27th, a dedicated program called "Happy Birthday Sophia," a selection of films—all also available on demand—to celebrate the world-famous Italian actress, who during her long and astonishing career has won two Oscars and five Golden Globes, including Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as a Grammy Award, the Coppa Volpi in Venice, the Prix d'Interpretation Feminine in Cannes, a BAFTA, ten David di Donatello Awards, three Nastri d'Argento Awards, a Golden Bear, and a Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. Sky is also enriching its tribute to Sophia Loren with special programming on Sky Arte: on Friday 20 September at 21.15pm Sky Arte (Sky channels 120 and 400) will broadcast the first TV screening of “Sophia Loren – L'inclassificabile”, a documentary that retraces the successes that have made her an enduring and unclassifiable legend of world cinema. In her long career, Sophia Loren is remembered for her magnetic and surprising performances, but also for her numerous collaborations with the most talented internationally renowned actors and the great masters of cinema. Among the latter, Vittorio De Sica, who directed her in numerous masterpieces: from comedies, in tandem with Marcello Mastroianni, such as “Matrimonio all'italiana” (September 20), based on a work by Eduardo De Filippo, and “Ieri, oggi e domani” (Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow) (September 21), awarded with the Oscar for best foreign film, to famous melodramas such as “I Girasoli” (September 23), written by Cesare Zavattini and Tonino Guerra, and “Il Viaggio”, with Richard Burton scheduled for September 25. In her brilliant career, Sophia Loren has also collaborated with other extraordinary directors: Ettore Scola, who directed her in the masterpiece “A Special Day” (September 22), Golden Globe for best foreign film; Francesco Rosi transforms her into a splendid Cinderella in seventeenth-century Naples in “Once Upon a Time” where she plays alongside Omar Sharif; Renato Castellani directs her, paired with Vittorio Gassman, in “Questi Fantasmi” (September 24). The collection also includes the amusing comedy with Alberto Sordi “Due notti con Cleopatra”, broadcast on September 26, the first film adaptation of Verdi's opera “Aida”, the Italian-French-Iberian production, set in late eighteenth-century Paris “Madame Sans-gene”, and the grotesque comedy by Mario Monicelli “La Mortadella” with Gigi Proietti and Danny De Vito. The programming is completed by famous films such as “The Pride and the Passion”, the adventure film with Frank Sinatra and Cary Grant, set in Spain in 1810, and the thriller “Cassandra Crossing” with Burt Lancaster, Richard Harris and Ava Gardner, which closes the dedicated programming on September 27. The journey through Sophia Loren's extraordinary career is enriched by the documentary, produced by Cinecitta' in collaboration with Sky Cinema, “Sophia Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow” which tells the story of the actress through her most significant films, images from the Luce archive and the intervention of illustrious names in international cinema such as Woody Allen, Claude Chabrol, Ettore Scola, Dino Risi, Francesco Rosi and Lina Wertmueller. The documentary and films are also available on demand in the Happy Birthday Sophia collection.
