In implementation of the Action Plan to combat waste fires signed on 19 November 2018 by the President of the Council of Ministers, the Ministers concerned and the President of the Campania Region, the Control Room chaired by the Person in Charge of combating the phenomenon of fires in the Campania region, has ordered inter-force territorial surveillance operations in the municipalities of Melito di Napoli, Mugnano, Giugliano in Campania, Calvizzano, Naples. Twenty-one crews were involved, for a total of fifty-one units belonging to the "Campania" Group of the Italian Army, the Giugliano State Police, the Carabinieri of the Melito and Mugnano Stations, the Pozzuoli Forestry Carabinieri, the Giugliano Guardia di Finanza Company, the Metropolitan Police, the Local Police of Naples, Melito, Calvizzano, Mugnano and ASL of Naples. The identification of the targets was also carried out thanks to the use of drones from the Campania Group.
8 business and commercial activities were checked, 5 of which were seized for illegal waste management; 49 people were checked, 8 of which were reported to the Judicial Authority, 5 were fined and 27 were illegal workers; 14 vehicles were checked, 3 of which were illegally transporting ferrous material that was seized. Administrative sanctions of approximately 15.000 euros were ascertained.
In particular, a shoe factory was seized in Mugnano: in the production area of about 600 square meters, 29 workers were employed, 26 of whom were working illegally; in the company, which had no authorizations, leather scraps and processing material were found without any traceability and documentation relating to the correct disposal of waste.
Another illegal worker was employed in a car repair shop that was seized together with a completely illegal body shop: the owners were reported for illegal waste management.
In the municipality of Melito di Napoli, 2 auto repair shops were seized for illegal waste disposal (used oil, spare parts and contaminated packaging); one of the owners was reported and two cars were seized.
In the nearby municipality of Giugliano in Campania, a construction company was seized for illegal storage of waste material and a body shop for illegal disposal of waste deriving from manufacturing.
In the municipality of Naples, a completely illegal business (previously seized) operating in the galvanization sector where hazardous liquid waste was illegally disposed of was seized; the owners were also reported for stealing electricity from the public grid.
